Why We Keep Our Formula Simple (The Case for 8 Ingredients)

More ingredients doesn't mean better baby skincare. Here's why Skinhug uses only 8 carefully chosen plant oils, what each one does, and why a shorter list is often the safer choice.

Why fewer ingredients can be better for baby skin

When you hear "only 8 ingredients," it's normal to pause. Is that really enough? Is something being left out?

Most of us have been trained to believe longer ingredient lists mean better products — especially when it comes to babies. But baby skin doesn't work that way. For newborns, fewer ingredients is often the safer, more thoughtful choice.

The case for a short ingredient list in baby skincare

Baby skin absorbs more and reacts faster

Baby skin is thinner than adult skin, more permeable, and still developing its own protective barrier. Every ingredient has more impact — not just the beneficial ones, but the unnecessary ones too. Adding ingredients without a clear purpose isn't just wasteful. It's a potential risk.

Shorter lists are easier to trust

If your baby reacts to a product with a 25-ingredient list, you're essentially guessing what caused it. With 8 ingredients, you can rule things out quickly and make better decisions. Clarity builds real trust — not just in the brand, but in your own understanding of what's going on your baby's skin.

Simpler formulas are right for sensitive skin

For babies with eczema-prone, reactive, or very sensitive skin, every additional ingredient is another variable. A clean, minimal formula minimizes that risk from day one.

What each of the 8 ingredients does and why it earns its place

Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride — lightweight base for fast absorption

A coconut-derived emollient that makes the formula spread easily and absorb quickly without feeling sticky. Critical for comfort in Thailand's warm, humid climate.

Squalane — skin-identical moisture support

Closely mimics the natural oils skin produces, which is why it absorbs so readily. Supports the skin barrier and reduces dryness without any oily residue.

Grape Seed Oil — linoleic acid for barrier repair

Rich in linoleic acid, which is a building block for ceramides — the compounds that hold the skin barrier together. Added following Thai FDA guidance to make the formula lighter and better suited for tropical climates.

Jojoba Esters — velvety finish, non-greasy

Gives the oil its soft, velvety finish that lasts after the oil has absorbed. Smooths dry or flaky areas immediately and helps the formula feel balanced rather than oily.

Sunflower Seed Oil — well-studied barrier support

One of the most researched oils for baby skin. High in linoleic acid and vitamin E. Helps strengthen the skin barrier and reduce moisture loss. Gentle enough to be used in neonatal care.

Cucumber Seed Oil — soothing and cooling

Known for its calming and anti-inflammatory properties. Particularly useful for heat rash, irritated patches, and skin that's been exposed to drool, friction, or frequent wiping. Also gives Skinhug its natural soft green tint.

Green Tea Seed Oil — antioxidant nourishment

Nourishing without heaviness. Rich in antioxidants and traditionally used in high-quality Asian skincare. Adds depth and skin-protective benefit to the formula.

Vitamin E — natural preservative and skin support

Helps the oil stay fresh without synthetic preservatives. Also provides antioxidant benefit directly to the skin. One ingredient doing two jobs efficiently.

Why Skinhug has no fragrance or essential oils

Some baby oils include lavender, jasmine, or citrus essential oils. They make bath time feel spa-like and the scent can become part of the family's bedtime ritual. We understand the appeal.

Why we chose fragrance-free from 0+ months

Fragrance is one of the most common skin irritants, even in natural form. When skin is already compromised — drool rash, heat rash, irritated folds — fragrance can sting. Since it provides no benefit to the skin itself, we removed it entirely.

Skinhug is made for parents who prefer ultra-simple, fragrance-free care especially in the early months. You can always add scented rituals elsewhere. The baby oil stays clean.

Eight ingredients isn't about doing less. It's about stopping at enough.
